In every talent there is a force that drives one to be the best - determination. Some have a little, some don't. For those who do, there are no limits.
When I first met this 22 year old, photography was not what I had in mind. So he became my home boy. Starting his passion with a classic digital camera, Sony DSC-T3 and for the sole purpose of capturing a snapshot of time, he has turned into the one sick bad ass.
Knowing very little about photography, I thought I'd ask what his top three favourite camera settings are, 'I don’t have a particular favorite camera setting because every subject and idea I have is different from the previous but I mainly shoot with aperture priority and getting into manual mode.' With the drive to bring about personality in his shots, camera settings comes second (still as crucial) to the focus he places on his subjects and the meaning it will consequently evoke.
Models love John and his crew, because of how they make you feel beneath the lights. Although they aim to get the best shot, you don't feel pressured to look a certain way. They just tell you to 'do whatever', and the freedom that comes with that, is priceless.
And what can we expect?
'I’m a part of a group of photographers that go by the name of ‘JMCK Photography’ and at the moment we’re doing a lot of practice photo shoots, developing our style and portfolio while at the same time covering events and networking with a whole lot of people in different industries.'
John is working on an inspiring landscape portfolio which is planned to launch in November. This project is aimed at bringing into focus the beauty in Australian nature. With many challenges he is driven to fight off one battle at a time. With technology and the ample supply of cheap but fantastic quality cameras in the market, it's not about who takes 'good shots' anymore. It's about capturing a character that cannot be recoded ever again. Not in a different machine, nor in a different place or time. The consumer now looks for meaning, model looking for confidence and youth looking for inspiration.
'Its hard work and you have to be willing to put in the effort and time. People may think that photography is easy because you just need a camera and all you need to do is press a button and that’s it but there is so much more to it than that. There’s a lot of admin work and a lot of planning. For young photographers who want to get into the industry, it might seem a bit daunting at first but once you develop a proper workflow then this won’t be such a challenge.'
With the commitment placed on his portfolio, John continues to 'be there'. You can catch him in events, fashion shows, birthdays, weddings and corporate functions. This beast is definitely worth to get your mind around. In his pictures you will find a window into a perspective you have yet to discover. With his crew beside him, they are determined to make it and beyond. Stay tuned, otherwise - you'll miss out.
